Is My Pool Leaking or Just Evaporation in Tampa?

I’ve spent the better part of 12 years crawling around backyards from Palm Harbor to Wesley Chapel. Whether I’m in the sandy soil of Land O’ Lakes or dealing with the tricky water tables of New Port Richey, I hear the same thing every single week: "My pool level is down, but it’s just the Florida heat, right? It’s gotta be evaporation."

Look, I get it. We live in Florida. It’s hot, the sun is relentless, and your lanai screen isn't doing much to stop the afternoon sun from hitting that water surface. But if you’re losing 1/4 inch of water per day or more, we need to stop guessing and start testing. Before you call me or any other technician, let me ask you the most important question: How much water have you added to the pool in the last 24 hours?

The "Evaporation Myth"

I hear it constantly: "My neighbor says we lose an inch a week to evaporation." Here is the hard truth from someone who has spent thousands of hours in these pools: If you are losing more than 1/4 inch of water per day, you have a leak. Period.

While humidity and wind speed play a part in evaporation, a properly functioning pool shouldn't be dropping at a rate that makes you worry. When I hear homeowners use "evaporation" as a blanket excuse for a pool that’s down two inches in three days, I know they are just trying to avoid the reality of a plumbing issue. Evaporation doesn't leave wet spots in your cracks in pool plaster yard, and it certainly doesn't cause your pump to run dry.

The Only Test That Matters: The Bucket Test

Stop guessing. If you want to know if you have a leak, you need to perform a bucket test. It’s the gold standard, it’s free, and it’s the first thing I’m going to ask you about when I arrive.

Bucket Test Pool Steps

Bring your pool water to the normal operating level. Fill a five-gallon bucket with pool water about 5 inches from the top. Place the bucket on the first or second step of your pool (to keep the water temperature similar). Mark the water level on the inside of the bucket and the water level on the outside of the bucket (the pool water level) with a piece of electrical tape or a grease pencil. Wait 24 hours. Compare the results.

If the water level in the pool dropped significantly more than the water level in the bucket, you aren't fighting the sun—you're fighting a leak. It’s that simple.

Why Tampa Pools Are Unique

Working in Florida presents challenges you don't see in other parts of the country. We have sandy, loose soil that shifts, and a high water table that can hide leaks for months. When a pipe breaks in Land O’ Lakes or New Port Richey, that water often just disperses into the ground rather than pooling on your deck. If the soil is saturated, the leak might even be drawing water into the pool during heavy rain, masking the problem until the dry season hits.

Non-Invasive Detection: How We Find It

I’m a firm believer in non-invasive techniques. If you hire someone who immediately suggests taking a jackhammer to your deck, fire them. There is no reason to start digging until you know exactly where the failure is. We have the technology to pinpoint a pinhole leak without making a mess of your backyard.

Our Diagnostic Process

Dye Testing: We use specialized underwater dyes to look for cracks in the skimmers, returns, lights, and main drains. If there’s suction, the dye will pull right into the crack. LeakTronics Acoustic Detection: This is my go-to tool. By using sensitive microphones to listen for the sound of escaping water or air, we can "hear" a pipe leak from under the concrete. It’s incredibly accurate and saves you from unnecessary demolition. Line Pressure Testing: We isolate each plumbing line and use air pressure to verify if the pipe holds or drops. If the needle drops on the pressure gauge, we know exactly which line is compromised.

Common Leak Locations

In my 12 years of work, these are the usual suspects:

Location Common Symptom Skimmer Throat Water level drops to the bottom of the skimmer mouth and stops. Light Niche Constant loss, often exacerbated by the conduit pipe behind the light. Return Fittings Usually a loose seal or a crack in the PVC pipe behind the wall. Main Drain Harder to spot, usually requires a professional diver or acoustic gear.

Why You Should Avoid "Scare Tactic" Contractors

I see it too often: a company comes out, does a five-minute visual inspection, and tells you that your entire plumbing system is shot and the pool needs a full renovation. That is almost never the case. Most leaks are minor structural cracks or a single section of pipe that has failed due to settling soil.

At Level Up Leak Detection, we focus on precision. We use high-end equipment like LeakTronics because it gives us concrete evidence. We don't guess, and we don't upsell. We find the leak, we mark it, and we give you a clear path forward.

The Bottom Line

Don't let a "maybe" turn into a backyard sinkhole. If your water level is acting weird, perform the bucket test today. If the numbers don't match, give us a call. We offer a free estimate on our detection services, and we’ll walk you through every step of the process so you understand exactly what’s happening beneath the surface.

And seriously—if you tell me you've been adding three inches of water a week and think it's "just the Florida sun," I’m going to smile, but I’m going to make you do that bucket test first!
